LASIK Xtra
What Is LASIK Xtra?
Performed in conjunction with LASIK, LASIK Xtra is a cornea strengthening procedure that enhances the corneal biomechanical integrity.
Why is There A Need for LASIK Xtra?
During a LASIK surgery, an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea to correct for refractive errors. As a result, one’s cornea becomes thinner after LASIK. For those with sufficient corneal thickness, this is not a problem. However, for this reason, people with thin corneas may not be ideal candidates for LASIK. By adding LASIk Xtra to the treatment procedure, people with corneas that were previously classified as ‘too thin’ may be able to undergo LASIK.
The LASIK Xtra Treatment Process
LASIK Xtra is performed together with LASIK. It takes around 3 minutes.
- Riboflavin is instilled into the cornea
- The riboflavin-infused cornea is infused with UV-A light
- Under the light, corneal cross-linking occurs, strengthening the cornea
